LG TV series 2022: everything you need to know (2023)

The entire 2022 LG TV lineup is available to buy now, with options ranging from super premium 97-inch OLEDs to entry-level 4K LED TVs. The resounding success of the G-series premium Evo OLED panel has led to its expansion into the C-series, meaning there's now a more affordable way to get a brighter OLED picture. And there are more size options available than ever with the introduction of the 97-inch and 83-inch G2 models and a 42-inch panel for the C2.

Gamers are still well catered for with future-proofed new modes, menus, and unlimited 48Gbps HDMI 2.1. There's also an updated version of the Alpha processor for 2022 with new image and sound technologies, plus an updated version of WebOS with more customization options.

In the world of LCDs, the brand is moving away from NanoCell in favor of Mini LED-based QNED kits.

There's a lot to discuss, so let's get started.

LG OLED Evo series expands

Prior to last year, the C-Class model had been the sensible choice of every new LG OLED series. It represented the best visual bang for the buck with a flagship panel and visuals without the sound, niche design and high price of the more premium ranges. So we were disappointed to find that in 2021 that wouldn't be the case, as LG introduced a new brighter and sharper OLED Evo panel, but limited it to the premium G1.

This year, however, both the G2 and C2 are from the OLED Evo series, so now you can get a brighter image at a lower price and with a less specialized design. The OLED Evo 2022 technology is seemingly better than before, too, thanks to a reworked panel and processor.

However, the G2 will still have an advantage over the C2 in the form of additional heat dissipation technology, which LG claims will make it even brighter at both top and average nits.

OLED.EX

It's not just the high-end that's getting a brightness boost in 2022. LG Display, panel suppliers to LG, Sony, Panasonic and many others, has announced that some of the innovations in OLED Evo will be rolled out more generally with the Introduction of 'OLED.EX' screens.

OLED.EX (a portmanteau of 'Evolution' and 'eXperience') uses deuterium and a proprietary algorithm-based 'EX technology' to help increase brightness by 30 percent compared to conventional OLED displays. The company says that EX.Technology can predict the amount of use of each individual diode based on your viewing habits to more precisely control the display's power input and thus "more accurately express the details and colors of the video content being played".

Because deuterium is more efficient and stable than currently used hydrogen-based compounds, it has a longer shelf life and requires less cooling, meaning overall panel thickness is reduced by 30 percent in Compared to existing panels: This results in a 65-inch OLED. panel from 6 mm to a thickness of 4 mm.

It's unclear exactly which models and screen sizes will benefit from OLED.EX, but the technology will be integrated into all OLED TV displays manufactured at LG Display's manufacturing facilities in Paju, South Korea and in Guangzhou, China, from the second quarter of 2022.

Over the past two years, the rise of home viewing and gaming has led LG to increase its range of panels at both ends of the spectrum: there's now a mammoth 97-inch panel and a much more modest 42-inch version. .

The G series has a super-large 97-inch screen, as well as an 83-inch option, which was limited to the Z1 last year. Meanwhile, the popularity of the 48-inch C1 with gamers and those with less space has prompted the addition of a 42-inch C2 to the family. However, potential buyers should note that the 48-inch and 42-inch OLEDs aren't quite as bright as their bigger brothers.

Both the G and C series have slim bezels, from 10.2mm to 6mm, while the G2 also ditches the G1's 45-degree beveled edges in favor of cleaner right angles.

Anyone who has ever had trouble hanging a TV on the wall, or even taking it out of the box, will understand that the G2 is 20% lighter than last year's G1, while the C2 weighs a whopping 47%. less than C1. LG's 2022 OLEDs feature the latest version of its Alpha 9 processor, now in its fifth generation, with iterative improvements to image and sound technology. There's still the same clearer text, automatic genre selection, and genre optimization as before, as well as last year's updates including object buffing, scene detection, and automatic volume leveling.

AI enhancement has been tweaked to improve its effectiveness and remove a step that could potentially add unwanted artifacts, while a new professional dynamic tone mapping algorithm subdivides the screen into more discrete areas (with a magnitude of 10) to a more granular improvement.

Object Background Enhancement also gets a dynamic and vivid mode that can better differentiate foreground and background by analyzing them separately, which LG says creates greater depth of field.

LG webOS 22

The new operating system refines the changes made last year, mainly improving customization and recommendations, which were the weak points of webOS 6.0.

Users can now create up to six profiles, which can be accessed from the home page or via the smartphone's NFC Magic Tap. Each profile receives personalized viewing recommendations, sports alerts, favorite app lists, and custom ordering of content shelves.

NFC Magic Tap can also be used to mirror a mobile device on an LG TV screen. Up to four members of the same household can also mirror content from one TV to another using 'Room To Room Share', a feature that allows viewing of cable or satellite content on multiple screens without an additional set-top box.

Also new for 2022, 'Always Ready' is an ambient mode designed for when you're not watching TV but don't want a black rectangle in your room. Instead, the screen can display the weather, a clock, art, staff photos, animations, or lightly animated music. Improvements to the latest models include an updated Game Optimizer menu with easier access to important settings, quick clicks for all controls and, in addition to the four existing game genre presets, a new preset for sports games. How useful this is remains to be seen, when we reviewed the G1 last year we found that while these features have the potential to give you a competitive edge by revealing detail in the brightest and darkest parts of the image that might otherwise overlooked, they also make the image slightly less accurate. We still prefer to enable HGiG and use your console's (and game's) video calibration features for the most authentic performance.

Although all of last year's OLEDs except the A-series had HDMI 2.1 ports, there was a slight uproar in some corners of the internet because bandwidth was capped at 40Gbps. This is more than enough bandwidth for all current video and audio formats (Xbox Series X and PS5, for example, have HDMI 2.1 bandwidths of 40 Gbps and 32 Gbps respectively), but to avoid further consternation, LG has increased the HDMI 2.1 ports on its 2022 OLEDs to 48 Gbps. You may not need it yet, but you can be sure that your LG OLED is at least a little more future-proof.

While the inclusion of these features varies by range, all models benefit from a new Dark Room mode to reduce eye strain when gaming in low light by reducing glare without sacrificing contrast.

2022 LG TV range breakdown

According to last year's convention, 2022 is the '2' model year for OLED. So the new C-Class model is C2 (replacing the C1) and the G-Class is G2 (replacing the G1). In addition to these two series, the 8K Z series returns with another Z2 model, and there are also basic B2 and A2 models. There's no word yet on a new roll-up 'R' model.

Beneath the OLEDs is a new range of QNED TVs, combining Mini LED-based backlighting with a NanoCell layer for a seemingly excellent balance of contrast, color and cost. However, LG has stated that it intends to move away from nanocell technology and focus on improving precision dimming with Mini LEDs.

Although it lacks LG's OLED Evo technology, the top model for 2022 is still the 8K Z2 OLED. The Z2 is powered by a specific 8K version of the Alpha 9 Gen 5, designed to take full advantage of the increased resolution, and is available in 77-inch and 88-inch sizes.

Like the G2, the Z2 has what LG calls a 'Gallery' design, meaning it's very slim and has a flat back which makes it ideal for wall mounting. Unlike the G2, which only comes with a wall mount, the 88-inch Z2 comes with a very fancy floor stand, and the 77-inch model appears to include both feet and an integrated flat wall mount.

Televisor LG G2 OLED Evo

While the G2 no longer has the distinction of being the only model to feature Evo OLED technology, LG insists it will remain the brightest OLED in the range thanks to the addition of a new heat dissipation layer, which it says the company will upgrade both peaks. and medium shine.

Like its predecessor, the excellent G1, the G2 is very slim and looks like a picture frame, ideal for flush-mounting on the wall. It is also compatible with LG's Gallery Easel Stand as well as standard feet. Last year both the Gallery stand and the feet were extras and not included in the box, and this time it is the same. At least the optional stand is a pedestal with a rather narrow footprint, as opposed to the pointlessly spaced feet of the past.

Thanks to a new chassis built from composite material, the G2 is 20% lighter than its predecessor, making it easier to assemble, which will come in handy for those opting for the newer sizes in the range: 83-inches and a mammoth 97-inches. . inch model.

Unfortunately, the 55-inch and 65-inch versions of the G2 in the UK are quite a bit more expensive than their G1 equivalents at launch, and the same goes for the 65-inch model in the US. Interestingly, the 77-inch model has dropped in price.

We call the LG OLED65G2 LG's "best OLED yet," giving it five stars thanks to its bright picture, deep blacks, and strong colors. Televisor LG C2 OLED Evo

We're pleased to see the success of the Evo panel now carry over to the C2, bringing brighter picture performance down to a lower price point.

We'll have to wait to get our hands on both the G2 and C2 to see how much of a difference the former's heat dissipation layer makes, but the C2 looks like a very beefy prospect nonetheless, with the latest Alpha 9 processor and all the latest game features.

It's also available in more sizes than any other model in the range, starting with a new 42-inch size and going all the way to 83-inches. However, buyers should note that the two smaller sizes (42-inch and 48-inch) won't be as bright as their bigger siblings, despite being designated OLED Evo models.

The 48-, 55-, and 65-inch versions of the C2 are more expensive than their C1 equivalents at launch, and the new 42-inch model isn't any cheaper than the 48-inch, which is a shame. The United States has not seen such cross-generation price increases, and these versions of the C2 were released at the same price as the C1. In both regions, the 77-inch and 83-inch versions are actually cheaper than before.

The B-series lacks the Evo panels of the higher models and has a step-down processor, the Alpha 7 Gen 5. While we haven't reviewed these cheaper OLEDs, based on what we know of other models, we can see some notable features that make the B2 stand out. But a big downside for those potentially looking for the B2 in Australia is that they may be out of luck as LG doesn't appear to be selling it.

The A series has the same processor as the B2, but only has a 60Hz panel instead of 120Hz. This is likely only an issue for gamers, who should also note that there's no VRR support or HDMI 2.1 ports, but the A2 is well-suited for TV and movies, with a range of sizes to fit smaller spaces.

The A2 series seems to vary more between markets, with certain screen sizes and prices limited to specific countries. The bottom line with the A2 is that it's a solid entry-level OLED in many cases, but if you can stretch to the B2 and plan on using your TV for gaming then we'd recommend going that route.

LG QNED NanoCell 8K and 4K TV

Beneath LG's OLEDs sit a series of QNEDs that combine Quantum Dot and NanoCell technologies, either edge-lit or backlit via MiniLED dimming zones.

NanoCell, which uses a filter to improve color rendering, had previously been LG's premium LED format, but last year the company introduced Quantum Dot NanoCell+ color technology, expanding the process by using an emissive layer instead. of a filter to further broaden the spectrum.

While the full lineup has yet to be defined, LG has confirmed a mix of Mini LED models (with more precise dimming) and non-Mini LED models. At the higher end is the 86-inch 8K QNED99 model, which has around 2,400 independent dimming zones (with Precision Dimming Pro+) combined with LG's advanced dimming algorithm.

Meanwhile, the QNED90 features Precision Dimming Pro Mini LED technology and sports standard QNED85 Precision Dimming. Finally, the QNED80, an edge-illuminated QD NanoCell, is mentioned. All QNED models for 2022 are available in sizes between 55 and 86 inches. The 8K QNED99 has the Alpha 9 Gen 5 processor, while the bottom three models have the step-down Alpha 7 Gen 5.

LG has confirmed that there are still some regular NanoCell models available this year, but in the long term it looks like it will phase them out in favor of QNED.
